@BOFH: Remote Access Malarkey

"Sometimes," the PFY admits. "Although other times I find that if I leave the call open long enough the user'll go back into their printer settings and remember they stuffed around with the local printer/network printer combo and put it right themselves."

Just pure gold - scary thing is that I've done this before today and it does work.

Paris - because I am still trying to work out who is smarter; her or users...

We've hijacked your baby....

Yeah I got one here in Oz yesterday and immediately thought that it was pretty low to stoop to that level, let's hope that the relevant law enforcement agencies catch these a**holes and give them the sentence they deserve.

As a parent, there are some lines that you just don't cross - this is one of them.

Filters??

Now if only they can develop one so that the next time some idiot calls after developing a web site in Publisher and says that they can't upload it, they get disconnected...

Paris?? Because even she isn't stupid enough to use Publisher to build a web site.

Deadly Oz snake bites tourist's todger

Re: There's a difference between the bush and the outback..

As I'm a Cairns resident, snakes are the least of your worries here.

Over the course of the last 4 years, I've come across a black snake, (what we believed was a) taipan in a barn and a tiger snake alone in semi rural areas.

Even in some of the more populated areas you can see crocodiles in the creeks who could come up to the road side if they wanted to. That includes creeks that run underneath the main highway, seen a nice 3m specimen driving along one day looking down into a creek...

One of the more popular tourist beaches near where I live has a creek that feeds out to the ocean from the rear of a resort which is know to have a pair of 5m and 2.5m crocodiles in it; that being said, I can testify that it does yield good Barramundi and Mangrove Jacks though :-)

Every year one of the crocs comes out onto the beach (during wet season) and makes local headlines. Bottom line is that living or visiting here in FNQ, you need to have your wits about you, apply common sense and you won't have any problems.

I am intrigued as to why the guy was squatting to take a pee though; the outcome might be God's way of saying he should be standing up to pee, perhaps he's a poor bugger whose been nagged into submission?

Geez Julian, I'm not complaining!

If that's all the cellulite she's got then she's welcome to check out my PC any time she likes and I'm more than happy to rub suncream onto those legs :-)

Err, that sounds like the phone...

Do we need computer competence tests?

Andrew Tunney
Thumb Up

Computer Licence?

Amen to that!!!

I've long held the opinion that people should have to pass the following basics of being able to use a computer before they are allowed to purchase one:

1. Be able to set up an email account from scratch

2. Be able to install and uninstall a program from a PC

3. Know what a web browser is

4. Know how to add and remove a printer

5. Know the difference between POP3 and IMAP accounts

6. Understand what an SMTP or outgoing server is

I've heard the horrendous howls of the left wing "do-gooders" chanting that this is an elitist view; how many of these people have honestly had to walk people who have no clue beyond how to turn on the computer through the 10 or so minutes to set up an email account which if they had the above skills they would be able to do it inside 2 minutes?

Every day I deal with this and let's not even begin to pretend to understand the amount of people who want to register a domain and have a web site but don't even have basic skills or understand what FTP is or how to write a web site and it's just getting worse. The next person who calls asking me for assistance to upload a site using MS Publisher should be publicly flogged and have the wounds scrubbed with peroxide and steel wool.

Yes, I agree that licensing would take away a large segment of the economy supporting these 'idiots' and their ineptitude to do the basics but I have other things to do over the course of the work day asides from "hand holding and nappy changing". Some of these things that I would be freed up to do would be, chasing users who regularly breach disk quotas, follow up on outstanding accounts and developing documentation.

Irrespective of what your opinion is on this subject; the matter is a problem and one that I believe that must be addressed. It's not an easy subject but one that needs to be tackled all the same.
