MoD pledges greener buying

George

Madness I tell you...

"We've been hit sir!"

"What, how, we never saw them coming?!"

"No sir, we were in a our mandated power save 5 minutes where we turn everything off sir"

"Ahhh yes, well least we died doing something good for the world eh Smith?!"

Wow AC what a rant!

But it means nothing unless you put you name to it.

Or do you just go around pasting this sort of stuff in the vain hope that someone wants to agree with you?

Watchdog snarls at Commando Krav Maga

George
Paris Hilton

And so goes on the lies...

There is no one TV today that wasn't in the 'elite' special forces or whatever.

It's funny though the guys (and possibly girls these days) that did/still do those jobs never tend to talk about it and with good reason, there are rules.

I worked for a defence contractor and met a detachment and I found how so many were on TV...they were PT trainers.

Paris....because she is all real!

Hang on a minute!

You guys are just jealous because you didn't think about it. As for thinking about it as chain mail...well it's no wonder you didn't get the idea. I doubt it will be that heavy anyway, unless I am missing the sarcasm...quite possible!

Oh and I agree with you Lewis, it's a tad silly to suggest that now the body is protected they will fire tasers at the hear, surely the legs would be better!?

I've just realised this post is a bit ranty so I'll get my coat and go for a walk.

'U-turn' West: MI5 watching 'great' terror plot right now

George
Stop

Enough of these cretins

I am sure they are making these legislations so that they can be hailed as heroes in some future discussion.

We the British public, or at least most people I know are scared of terrorism. Which is fine but most of us are of an age where we experienced a constant and very real threat, the IRA and its enemies and groups throughout the UK. We were strong enough then and we are strong enough now to take these threats sensibly without signing off on any kind of privacy law abandoning my right to a private phone call. Sure if I did (which I wouldn't of course) starting to plot then I understand my phone would be tapped.

These kind of databases do not work, what happened to the talk after 7/7 of intelligence not being an exact science? Why would it be now? It's like a race with the Americans to have the biggest data collection in whole world.

And aren't databases just the governments answer to everything, lets think out of the box people!

Western Digital sees future written on disks, not clouds

Hoorah! It's the end of the Cloud marketing rubbish....

At least the first company has company and said that Flash is not our saviour and the cloud is not the answer either, yet.

I agree with Graeme Leggett

I mean did he really think that a leading prominent member of the Royal family would appear in some silly BBC science fiction programme.

Or did he send the request for this very purpose.

Martin Sheen backs Paris for president

George
Paris Hilton

More of this kind of thing...

It really lightens the mood. And kudos to Sheen, I like that man because after all he has done he is still pretty normal. Cruise, take some notes.

I'm not even saying why for Paris, she speaks for herself.

New USAF Cyber-war formation downgraded

George

A strange combo...too many computer games!

Its a bit scary too that more than one agency was reporting on nuclear capability...surely thats asking for trouble, not big trouble but the kind that they have had recently.

As for space and cyber space...well its all just political manourvering but they are right they do not need a seperate command for it because how can an agency in charge of people's lives also be equal to one who do some hacking (ok not doing the job down but its unlikely they will lose men on the "battlefield".

Paris...because she is already all over the cyberspace theatre!

Windows Update to trumpet Vista Capable debacle?

George
Paris Hilton

I doubt this will happen...

...I know lots of people hate Microsoft and at times I do too, but this would not be possible, how could implement this properly without bringing down whole campaigns and possibly companys. Forget Microsoft for a minute.

A couple of examples:

1) PS3 and its list of long delayed games and some cancelled features (some kind of pop up when you turn "This console is now missing parts of its initial launch campaign 2 years ago...")

2) Broadband in the UK although they do deserve more than anyone. (Pop up on login "Sorry you are no way going to get what we marketed, thanks for signing up for the year though!)

2) HD-DVD "Hi guys some of the content we promised is never going to be on the films and you'll probably only get a 3rd of the films Blu0Ray players have but thanks for spending the cash"

Because even Paris wasn't an early adopter, her tape was not the first! Not even with night vision.

Virgin Galactic to save planet from climate change

George

Yes classic corporate rubbish here...

....the thing hasn't even flown yet and they are heaping on the stuff it will be able to do. How about getting one to fly THEN bolting bits on.

Also I still don't think there is much milage in sub-orbital space trips. Its kind of like "Welcome to nearly space, it's almost as good as the real thing". And until somebody has done it properly they should all stop talking about it, after all it may end up like the flying car!

Oh dear...

MoD Security Reqs

Hi guys.

Having worked in the past for a defence contractor the basic requirements of securing data are in two principals.

1) The site is secure, and therefore so is the data.

2) When the data is finished with disks are to be wiped to the set standard.

I am sure you can see a few problems with that. If anyone has any problems with me writing this visit the GSA (or their new name which I can't remember) and its all for all to see. Having said all that this was 2 years ago and so there may have been a substantial change. I doubt it.

One man death machine...

...I think they have been watching too much sci-fi. That thing must make a hell of a noise not to mention big clouds of dust. What happens over water, hot/cold environments with poor lift?

And everything these days is made for "special forces", what about the regulars, you can't make an impractical machine seem more attractive by sticking with "its for the special forces...silly" all the time. It doesn't wash.

Does anyone test anything anymore?

I mean did anyone take note of the wiring layout and "Hmm thats awful close to the hinge" as for the burns thats like "Don't bother to run it for a bit, I designed it and I know it works...just ship it already!".

I see loads of job adverts for testers, what are they all up to? Or maybe they need more, thats a good bet for the BSc guys!

Paris, because she is both silly and hot. Two references in the article pow pow POW!

McKinnon loses extradition fight

George
Stop

@ AC about Extradition

You clearly don't have a grasp of what an extradition treaty is. It is a legal agreement between two governments to send a suspected criminal residing in it's borders to the country in which the crime took place. Many things are considered before signing this including the "trial by jury" and Human Rights Charter points. It is not based on individual laws.

Why is it that when these stories come about controversial and mainstream worthy El Reg suddenly get inundated with ACs keen to make a point that they can't be held to account for.

Paris at least when she makes a point she sticks around to take the flack.

Royal Navy plans world's first running-jump jet

Hurrah Mister Cheese!

Well done for spotting things most people don't ever realise, our planes barely ever fly around in fully tooled up defensive combat patrol when not in a operational situation so why not use this technique.

And in fact the adoption of the Goalkeepr (I think, can't remember but its something like that) and the use of Type45 will mean the new carriers will be force projection.

UK MoD tries to resell surplus Eurofighters to India, Japan

George
Stop

@ Graham

Sorry just a quick correction the Eurofighter Tyhphoon will not be a carrier based craft and is no longer (if ever) being looked into. Instead we are buying the F35 Lightening II for that capability.

Note to all...that aspect of Defence is not for discussion today...please.

George
Stop

We always sell off surplus...

so whats different, we always knew this was going to happen, it was just who's going to buy them...if we create a little bidding war its all good.

I think that some parts of the media want the Eurofighter to fail no matter what, and everyone just stands in awe of the Raptor whereas that costs almost twice as much and only performs one role (I agree focus in that sense could be better though).

MoD: We lost 87 classified USB sticks since 2003

George
Flame

@ Aron A Aaardvark

"And therefore there was no need for the information to be classified in the first place.

Such losses emphasise the urgent need for a root and branch re-examination of the British classification system in tandem with a review of the Official Secrets Act with a view to greatly reducing the number of classified documents and releasing as many as possible into the public domain. Anything over twenty years old should be automatically released."

Thats like saying you should not be so worried about security on your PC. It is marked for a reason but is not critical. The system actually works pretty well from my experience and there really is no need for change, this stuff is confidential for a reason.

Anything over 20 years should be released? So stuff like how the Harrier was designed and built? Plans to defend the country and tactical nuances? Details on other kit aboard our (admittedly aging) Navy. Information on other countries and their forces? Intelligence data gathered on people and places, every photo, conversation.

Please be sensible about what you say.

Mark, nice to see you are all for benefiting everyone...

What about when Microsoft/Netflix tap up all the other studios, will PS3 be stuck with Sony, will the PS3 ever get download movies and would they hold out against MS when there is money to be made punting movies?

Wouldn't it be better to lay aside all this petty format fanboy stuff and try and get manufacturers to work together?

David Davis tells El Reg that Labour is 'mesmerised' by tech

George

@ Pete James

I see what you mean, but I like the guy admire him but this is sci/tech news not the 6:00 News, saying Labour is "mesmerised by tech" is just a strapline for an article which feels more like an advertorial.

I think the Conservatives needed to be ousted but not for long enough for the same to happen again but with Labour. Just goes to show ultimate power corrupts ultimately.

George

Dear El Reg. Please don't become a politcial mouthpiece.

You were wonderfully politically agnostic in the old days purely commenting IT in the government, this is a step in the wrong direction and feels like party politically broadcast.

No Anon Coward...we don't like any of them.

Pimping your business on the basis that 'X* money goes to charity' is a pretty poor advertising model and simply goes to show how large the profit margin already is. Look at Big Brother or Celebrity Big Brother they say the same thing, they take massive profit in premium rates and encourage to call more on the basis that some money goes to charity.

* being a normally pitiful amount

I would much prefer a structured and more useful gift to charities that can't be given to Chief Execs paychecks. See these below...

Brit carrier deals inked at last

George
Thumb Up

I agree Lewis

Its great we are building them and I welcome them but it could have been done better. Should have been nuclear for a start, we have got all the power stations coming (maybe) why not a couple of nuclear powered ships.

They will do the job and more but as always been hobbled a bit but short sighted money worries, for a start the fuel in the nuclear powered carrier can last years instead of constantly refuelling at a depot which may not be there (Gibraltar anyone?) in a few years.

Nevermind at least we have got something and with the current misfits in the cabinet we should be pleased at that I guess!

Sorry Steve, but I don't think its significant.

It is for us as customers as Cable & Wireless are not my preferred provider, however by far the biggest change was 'free' broadband that turned up about 2 years ago, that made everyone jump on the bandwagon, and arguably make themselves very vulnerable. Even Carphone Warehouse are struggling to make it work.

Scareware package greets marks by name

@ David

Come on now David, not everything has to turn into a PC vs Mac vs Linux bunfight, The Reg is above all that.

If you like arguments such as this their are plenty of sites out there for you. Other arguments you may like to have are:

1) Xbox 360 vs PS3

2) Gnome vs KDE

3) Chelsea vs Arsenal vs Man Utd

4) False Flag operation

However there is a valid option in BAE's Taranis UAV strike plane thingy, it was tested in this country before being declassified for news sources but that was way away from air lanes and indeed people.

I think its the overlords running from the police, they hate stop and search because of the phaser culture on their own planet.
