That is all. I have convinced the management that linux is now stable and user friendly enough to replace the sub par bloatware that is Vista on new machine roll outs, all our new PC boxes are coming OS free as of this month.
Part of the reason I made such a concerted effort to get this change was that MS seem so wrong-headed in their attitude towards OS architecture and interface design. Everything in Vista is harder to use and configure than in XP. There are no improvements in stability or user friendliness as far as I (and about 90% of our user base) can see. And the system resources used are growing with every release. Its quite frankly pathetic. Business wants a simple, easily manageable and cut down OS, not this bloated, awkward resource hog.
Google are the least of MS worries, as the song goes "You do it to yourself and that's what really hurts"
As someone who works in IT support for atmospheric research I can tell you two things.
1. 90% of research scientists are not very well paid at all. Im mid level IT support and I get paid better than most of the scientists here.
2. This stuff is real. The people doing the research have no vested interested in telling people that we need to cut emissions, they are putting it froward simply because it is the most sensible option.
3. There is a significant chance that we are fucked. Luckily for me my house is on a hill :)
Why is it people seem to be happy to believe in something that suits their prejudices (scientists are all in league, its all a hippie hoax, etc, etc) so easily, but cant just go and look at the real documentation and peer reviewed articles. This would put any rational doubt people have to rest.
RE: "...they need to go further than reducing some fees. How about they clean up all of the scam artists, con jobs, and excess shipping fee sellers? How many times have you seen a $5 product with a shipping fee of $25+?"
That is not a scam, its actually a way of stopping paying EBay so much money per sale.
Isn't this monumental piss take an ideal opportunity for some alternative sites to undercut ebay?
Its something not a lot of people on here have commented on, but the file browser on vista quite simply isn't as nice to use as the one on XP. Its basically awkward and hides away a lot of functionality. I also makes it awkward to cut and paste large groups of files (You need to click inside the folder you re going to put the files into before you right click and paste), its really annoying for someone like me who works with lost of small files all the time.
Its the number one reason I went back from Vista to XP on my work machine. The new interface is a drag to work with.
