Exploding femtocells: No need for a full recall, says Vodafone

Peter Curnow-Ford

Its a pity the operators aren't a bit more honest, only EE will have voice (VoLTE) at the end of '17 because they are contractually bound to do so for the Emergency Services.

Second is that greater than 50 or 60% of the handsets in use don't have VoLTE support. Yep good old 2G and 3G works well (still) when you can get it.

We have 2 femto's in our house (EE) and are battling vodafone to get a 3rd so a work's supplied phone can make a call!

Airwave must end in 2022

The spectrum used for Airwave must be returned starting 2020 and no later than 2022 as it was provided by government to Airwave under a contract that must expire in 2022 otherwise it conflicts with EU state aid rules.

GSMA sees 2.6GHz future

Peter Curnow-Ford

Ustrung Quotes GSMA Director as saying....

hi,

Yes but the GSMA also said,

“There is clear evidence that the volume of data flowing over mobile networks is growing rapidly and is being accelerated by the popularity of smart phones and the growth in music and video downloads,” said Tom Phillips, Chief Regulatory Affairs Officer at the GSMA. “The report highlights that the 2.6 GHz band will allow operators to address rapidly increasing traffic volumes in an efficient and harmonised way. Recent licensing of this band in Hong Kong, Norway, Finland and Sweden, for example, has highlighted that there is more demand for paired (FDD) than unpaired spectrum (TDD) and that the ITU’s recommended Option 1** plan is the best structure to stimulate market growth in a technology-neutral and competitive environment.”

Remembering the CDC 6600

Peter Curnow-Ford

Interfaced one of these to a PDP 11/70 back in '76

Did my internship/degree work experience with Digital Equipment Corp. and one of my projects was to interface a PDP 11/70 as a front-end processor used to load jobs and retrieve output. Went on and did the same for a 7600 as well.

Never forget the wiring, point to point shielded twisted pair and coax!!
