8086 and All That. Revisited

Not That Andrew

Re: Oh Yeah, Anglo Claptrap

You do realise this is humour, don't you? That's why it's in Bootnotes (R.I.P. Odds 'n Sods). Specifically it's a pastiche of a famous work of humour called "1066 and All That", which is a parody of British history textbooks of the 20's and 30's, complete with their obsessive Anglocentricity.

Dead Steve Jobs' mega yacht seized by testy Philippe Starck

Damn, that boat is UGLY. It looks like the illegitimate offspring of HMS Dreadnought and the Villa Savoye. I thought Jobs was supposed to have some sort of sense of aesthetics.

Wikipedia doesn't need your money - so why does it keep pestering you?

Re: Out of that entire article

So Wackypedia is using an article that says it shouldn't be used for serious research that uses that page as an example but confirms it was accurate as of time of writing as a reference? Oookay.... Someone over there has a wry sense of humour.

Swedish teens GO BERSERK in Instagram sex pic slut riot

Friends who live in Sweden tell me that rural Swedes view the cities, particularly Goteburg, with the sort of suspicion and horror that the British reserve for the worst sink estates. This goes some way to explaining that.

Win8 Hate in context

Not That Andrew

People will always complain about change, that is not news, but your comparison is not entirely valid. Program Mangler was included until XP IIRC and could be set as the default shell, whereas you have to use 3rd party tools to avoid the Start Screen and there was not a jarring visual and behavioural disconnect between Win32 and Win16 programs under Win9x (apart from lack of long file name support). Myself, I always thought File Mangler was a better file manager than Explorer.

Re: Not in any non-U buntu

Re: Canoncial is a business.

There is enough money in Linux support for Oracle to take an interest. Canonical wanted to to emulate Red Hat and turn a massive user community into a viable commercial Linux support business, The fact that they were unable to says a lot about them.

IMHO it's hard to beat the interface of Foobar2000. The default interface is simple and well laid out and supports multiple playlists. Its fully customisable so you can make it look blingy or add stuff like lyrics and album covers. I use the default myself

Re: ...hover over info bar

I personally don't think they should got rid of them altogether. There are appropriate uses for it and the basic info of what an info bar colour means is not IMHO an appropriate use. To me a more appropriate use would be using it to to get detailed information on the various areas of the info bar (although I would prefer a mouse click, myself).

Re: Deloitte & FaceBook

If I remember correctly Deloitte was one of the 10 separate companies advising on the FaceBook IPO, so you're right and I was wrong, the accountants are equally to blame for that fiasco.

Not That Andrew

Re: "Autonomy was audited by Deloitte every quarter...

It wan't really the accountants at fault at the FaceBook IPO, it was the 10 investment banks and stockbrokers advising on the IPO who are to blame. If you remember the original plan was to launch at $40, but when someone suggested launching at $80, not one of them objected. Despite the fact that almost everyone not involved in the IPO thought $80 was ridiculous and even $40 a bit high. I'm surprised there isn't an SEC investigation about that.

Post-defenestration Microsoft: It's the APIs, stupid. And Metro

@ Sean Timarco Baggaley

Yup, but a laptop with a touchpad is a slightly different beast from a laptop with a touchscreen. One could also point out that Apple closely evaluated going the touchscreen route with their laptops, but rejected it in favour of improving the touchpads

Not That Andrew

Re: I realise the horde of anti-MS downvoters will hit this hard...

No-one denies that Win8's touchscreen support is superb and it comes into it's own with a touchscreen. One of the major complaints about TIFKAM and Windows 8 is that it can feel like a touchscreen OS with mouse & keyboard support tacked on as afterthought.

Re: Good hardware MS killed off

I've still got a Sidewinder Precision Pro 2 joystick that works just as well now as it did when I bought it, despite there being no official drivers (about 12 years ago). Never had static problems with it, either (which is apparently an issue with USB Sidewinders).

I never understood why MS killed off the Sidewinder line. IMHO that ranks up there with canceling MS Flight Sim firing the dev team, then trying to resurrect it as some weird free to play MMO type thing.

Re: Sad, and a huge loss of resources

I agree that KDE4.0 was only meant as a developer preview, but for some reason all the big distro's (except RHEL and Debian stable) replaced KDE 3.5.9 with it as soon as it was released. THAT was the reason you had ordinary users bitching about it.

Don't blame the users, blame the idiotic distro maintainers who had to have the latest shiny in their new release. Yes, they should have done their homework and stayed on the old version of their distro, but back then only Fedora users expected things to break that badly with upgrades.

It was still pretty broken at KDE 4.2 when Slackware upgraded, and IMHO only approached equality to to KDE 3 with KDE 4.5 .
