Manchester's congestion charge: pay-to-leave

Michael
Dead Vulture

I remember ...

An episode of "Yes Minister" which dealt with the issue of success or failure in projects. It was stated that the majority of inefficiency and waste could be eliminated if the initial proposal REQUIRED submitting EXACT criteria for wether a project succeeded or failed from the outset.

Congestion charging brought traffic down in London by 10% or so.(Don't know exact figure... would not call 10% a success though.) ... It's a cash cow.

Michael

you're missing the point.

The main purpose of a "passport" is to record innoculations , veterinary treatment , drugs given, etc , including where it was pastured. I mean , even cows are chipped.. ( would you want to check if they grazed near windscale , did they come from the middle east -vaccination against bacillus anthracis in sheep, glanders in donkeys.... not to mention the huge differences in veterinary drug practices in europe as a whole.)

Most of the "greenies" live in london ....so,

http://www.nextenergynews.com/news1/next-energy-news-toshiba-micro-nuclear-12.17b.html

(seen recently in a slashdot article)

My solution is to let London and the major cities generate their own power .... they use the most of it. If they want to dispose of the fuel waste, i can see some HEAVY negotiation with local councils in cumbria and elsewhere. ( "separate your rubbish" ) .

It's always annoyed me that the guardian (A) pontificates about the "morality" of energy generation and (B) has it's base in london. ......and never poses a VIABLE energy solution . This is a solution , so propose something else , & implement it or stop whining.

Hutton: UK must become world No 1 in nuclear power

Michael
Coat

@Let's cover the country with one of the most dangerous technologies known to man

I suspect this post was by one of the Antiscience lobbyists (Subgenera - Ecofeminist)

This situation is one where the likes of cardinal o'Connor are proved false . Scientists need to improve the boundaries of science all the time . They DO need to know everything , so that accidents can be prevented . Nothing wrong with the technology, if ONLY competent scientists are involved ... leave out the priests and politicians .

What i was saying is that since scientists have been screwed over for so long , especially in this field , they should leave this area of expertise to the french . Why not ? better unions , better working hours... and no meddling by Brown et al...

Windscale was caused by politicians trying to rush to build the bomb ... the Brown atomic age part deux is simply a local c@ckfight.

Michael
Alert

@Foreign owned

"But then again if one presumes we don't need nuclear reactors with Union Jacks painted on them could not a lot of the power simply be imported?"

- EXACTLY. I suspect this might cause problems which are purely political , given the eurosceptic nature of politicians and their constituents this side of the channel......

Also.. dosen't scotland have an opt out? Also, the uk record on interaction between scientists and politicians was poisoned to an extent after windscale : If I recall correctly... the scientists were scapegoated for the fire when they were actually ordered to file the cooling fins of the uranium rods , and this contributed directly to the buildup of wigner energy... Someone correct me if im wrong on this , as I'm relying on memory, and cant quote a referrence offhand.

Michael

UK no 1

Nothing like a little patriotism to stoke the fires , eh? Still, directly after his recent pandering to the Antiscience lobbyists , I wonder where he's going to find these Physicists? He certainly won't find any on his back benches .... nor any molecular biologists neither .

The 'green' car tax grabs that don't add up

Michael
Flame

We're arguing semantics here

The main reason we're getting increases (indirectly) in tax is this . Increases in taxation are power . For politicians , power is good . It increases taxes for the same reasons a dog licks it balls .... because it can.(Tax is also the reason they dont drink tea in boston, not cos Nicaragua is closer .)

The whole argument about cars versus bikes is clear . Bikes beat congestion (Both types). As for carbon neutral bikes , try this ...http://www.dieselbike.net/militaryproduction.htm . (note the production date ...2005.).. I'd like one that runs on chip fat , thank you. If i run out of fuel i could flag down one of those chelsea tractors & do some roadside liposuction. A politician , maybe ...

Buses are cr@p... theyre more than often empty DURING the working day and tend to squish cyclists .. but then again, so do cars driven by speed demons and dozy numpties. And trains are usually crowded , overpriced and smell funny.

Oh , and anyone going on about pakistan or africa or bangladesh, etc . By the time global warming happens, there wont be anyone LEFT there. Hopefully i'll have moved to greenland by then...(Oh well .. better start paddling the canoe )

I AM concerned about global warming , (I live next to a river) but advice for any greens(especially london greens). Accept a command economy or a fascist state, or stop breathing. The continual droning about cycling /buses/cars/congestion is really going nowhere (literally). What's needed is to get rid of the 9 to 5 workweek, ( mandatory shifts for everyone) so road & rail are effectively used. Also, make internet shopping mandatory. Canned or dried foods only, so as to allow staggering of delivery times ( form a queue for the oranges, comrade) . Also , all engines to run on reject stolichnaya and chip fat. ( hmm potential ( Soylent) green recycling opportunity) It also solves the politician problem to the point where we can seriously consider replacement by a computer (a simple one maybe, that says "what?" & " I don't understand " & "where's the tea/coffee?")
