If the MPEG encoder uses an I-Frame every time a shot change is detected, then the subliminal frame would have an I-Frame and so would the first frame of the "proper" content, so it could work.

Ten... Premium Android smartphones
@ David Gosnell
It's interesting - I've heard a lot of people complain that the battery life on the Galaxy Ace is terrible. But I've had mine for about 2 weeks now, and it will last around 2.5 days on a charge with medium usage. Granted I can drain it pretty quickly if the screen is on and streaming videos, but I guess that's the same for all smartphones.
I wonder if we'll ever get to the day when battery use will improve, or if we'll end up habitually charging every night as we do with out laptops.
Hannspree Hannspad 10.1in Android tablet
Almost.... almost.....
We're getting close now! I'm happy to pay £200 - £250 for an Android tablet, but it must have at least 3.0, a good quality screen and be Android market compatible.
Of course, there are hacks out there for the Vega etc. But if - in maybe 12 months time - I can get something like the above right out of the box, then my credit card will get a workout.

South West Trains puts squeeze on commuters
Nothing new here
People have been complaining about these class 450 3+2 seat patterns for years now. I'm fortunate that the train I normally get into work from Portsmouth to Basingstoke is a call 444, but if the trains are swapped around and it ends up being a 450, it's a nightmare.
The leg room is not enough for anyone who is 6ft+ and the only way you can sit in the middle seat of 3 is if you sit bolt upright with your arms tucked in by yours sides. Not comfortable for any journey over 10 minutes.
SWT used to wheel out some sort of design study that they had done when anyone complained during the "Ask the manager" sessions, but the fact that their PR department always spout weird and wonderful BS when pressed on the matter indicates to me that they know full well that these seats are not comfortable.
Ironically, if the ripped out the aisle seat in the 3+2 combination seats, more people would probably sit down

Back in my university days, I got into a taxi on the way home and the taxi driver was fuming! He picked up a bloke who didn't have enough money on him and they agreed that the guy would leave his phone in the car while the taxi driver waited outside the halls of residence.
Ten minutes later, the cabbie realised that they guy had given him a fake phone, worth approximately 20p...

Croydon Advertiser blows lid on 'sinister' brothel
Ahhh Croydon
I was born just up the road in Mayday Hospital. London Road was never fantastic, but now that area of West Croydon does resemble a bombed out part of a third-world country.
The old Croydon General hospital is still rubble, as is the Half Moon pub and anywhere that does actually gets flattened gets turned into "modern contemporary apartments" I.e. Shared Ownership and Housing Association slumboxes.
Not forgetting all of the drunks that hang around West Croydon station, plus the regular fights that happen at the mini-cab place next door on a Friday and Saturday night. Ahhhh happy memories...

eBay cans free P&P requirement
@ AC
Although I'm happy to see the draconian Free P&P lifted, one scam with the exorbitant P&P was the fact that if you bought something that, for instance wasn't as described, the refund didn't include the P&P.
So for instance, if you bought a USB stick for £11 (£1 + £10 P&P) you would only get refunded £1 if the item wasn't as described etc. etc.

Reminds me a bit of FaceParty
I remember last year or the year before, FaceParty attempted some PR BS about how they were immediately excluding all over 35s from their site because of the risk of pedophilia. Obviously utter rubbish, as the real reason was that they lost their advertising revenue and couldn't afford to keep up the servers for the amount of members they had. As a result, it degenerated into a cesspit of 19 year old single-mother-of-fives with their saggy tits hanging out and chav-infested blokes with dodgy Vauxhall Novas.
This is most likely a PR stunt to generate traffic to their small website. If pushed to look deeper, they probably only removed the accounts of people who hadn't logged in for the last 12 months or something similar.

Sony Ericsson suspends Satio sales
No more bleeding edge
I've taken the executive decision with new phones - that there is no point paying money to be a beta tester. I've decided that from now on, I'll get a free phone on contract that's about 12 months old, so that the firmware updates are done and stable. Sounds like people are having trouble with the brand new HTC Touch HD2 as well.
I'm sure the Satio (and HD2) will be a great phone... in 3 months time when all the bugs are ironed out. Till then, it sounds like a paperweight. I'll get an N85/N86 now, and this time next year have a look at one of these babies.

Comedy UK social network berates moaning users
Wow
I was a member (and probably still am) of FaceParty, but haven't logged in for about 2 years. I received an e-mail a while back telling me they were going advert free and how wonderful it was all going to be (positive spin for the fact that the site was dying and no-one wanted to advertise with them anymore).
I wouldn't be surprised if they never come back - it looks and sounds like it's run by a 14 year old who's just thrown their toys out of the pram :D Never mind guys, you tried the whole social network thang and it didn't work for ya - good luck in Burger King.

The economy: A big Arab did it and ran away, claims PM
Too simplistic
The problem is that if you hike up the cost of petrol, it doesn't just affect the motorist. As someone earlier pointed out, buses, cabs, lorries and trains all require this oil-type stuff to run.
If you start raising the prices, so will the bus companies (Stagecoach and First - I'm looking at you. £1.50 for a single 2 mile bus ride???). Cab drivers will factor that into their fares, which will cost the public and businesses more.
All those lorries delivering food to the supermarkets will have to factor in the cost and go bust. And what about everyone buying their CDs/DVDs/Washing machines online? They don't magically turn up to your front door.
I'm not entirely sure what the solution is. More efficient cars, definitely. Maybe the government subsiding public transport to an extent? Loss leading routes available so that people who don't live on top of a train station can actually get there?
eBay: 'We will lower listing fees'
eBay is horribly broken
I usually buy reasonably low-cost stuff on eBay which isn't too much of a problem, but I wanted to sell my old Sony Ericsson k750i just before Christmas to raise a bit of cash. I had to watch the last hour of my auction like a hawk, as I had no less than 3 hijacked accounts bidding stupid money on the phone - either for kicks or to send to Nigeria presumably... Yes I may have eventually cancelled all the bids and done a second chance offer, but it was so much hassle. Until I can be sure that eBay can stop these fraudsters messing up auctions, I won't be selling any high value stuff again.
As for those defending deliberately high P&P charges... well. I don't buy from sellers like you. As people have previously pointed out, I don't want to get refunded £1 of a £29 item if something goes wrong with it.

Evesham Technology goes into liquidation
They Spammed me too...
I also got several spam e-mails from Evesham around 2003 which pissed me off no end. It wasn't as if it was just one - there were several, day after day. I thought that maybe the company was on it's last legs. It lasted longer than I thought it would. I'm desperately sorry for those who have lost their jobs, but like another person I explicitly warned people away from buying from Evesham as someome up in management obviously thought they could save some cash by buying dirty e-mail lists. Not the best way to run a company methinks. Ah well.
