White iPhone 4 spotted, 'shipped to Apple stores'

Darryl

Oh. My. God.

An established consumer gadget released in a DIFFERENT COLOUR????

(OK, I know that neither white nor black are actually colours, but you know what I mean.)

Why is this not front page news on every reputable media outlet on the planet?

It's the oldest working Seagate drive in the UK

Darryl

MFM - > RLL

I had two 40 MB MFM drives and reformatted them both on an RLL controller and both worked perfectly. One was a Seagate and the other was a Miniscribe. The Seagate bumped up to just over 61GB and the Miniscribe only made it to 55 or so. Ran a BBS on those two in an old homemade 286 box for a couple years, and never had an error.

title

You know that there was one of the world's largest natural disasters there last week, right? A billion dollars is going to be a very small percentage of what it's going to cost to fix northern Japan

Darryl

What's got me wondering

...is why there are always comments about how expensive it's going to be to clean this up. People did notice that there are entire cities and towns that have been mostly washed away by the tsunami, right? I would think that the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami are going to be ridiculously expensive to clean up/repair/replace, so I'm not sure why people are fixating on how expensive the nuke plant is going to be to fix. If the plant hadn't been there, Japan would've been able to fix everything from petty cash? If a large hydro dam was there and had to be replaced, it would have been easier/cheaper?

Darryl

Hardware failure vs. screwup

I've lot a lot more data on 'the cloud" (luckily I had the important stuff backed up) due to system/user errors like this than I've ever lost due to a hardware failure. Only ever lost one USB flash drive and it was a very old 32MB one that I used for sneakernetting (Sneakernetting: verb: to use a sneakernet.)

Yeah, "the cloud" has redundant systems to safeguard your data, but all that redundancy goes out the window when some update or something (or someone) fubars the data.

When all's said and done, Apple will release the iThing 2 that's 0.5 mm thinner than the original iThing was and all the Apple fans will swarm out to purchase it, and all of the people who use technology as a fashion statement will swarm to be seen in public with it. And Apple will rake in the dough.

My theory is that those old iPod commercials with the white silhouette people dancing spastically in front of psychedelic backgrounds were actually carefully crafted to hypnotise and brainwash the masses.

Bones is turning into a Toyota/MS commercial

I mean, I really like the show, but in the last episode, Bones and Booth are driving in Bones' Toyota Prius (with the obligatory zoom in on the Toyota logo) and they're discussing the adaptive cruise control. "The Prius senses if you're too close to the car in front of you and slows down automatically."

Then they take their calls on their Windows Phone 7 devices (with the same zoom in on the home screen)

Give me a break. What a way to spoil what is otherwise a very good series.

Microsoft finally says adios to Autorun

Darryl

Yeah

It was for software and driver developers so that they could pop up a useless resource hogging animated thing with sound and crap as soon as you plugged in a CD. Doesn't matter that all anybody ever did was click on the "Install the damn software" button, which could've been much easier if they'd just included on the box:

1) Insert CD

2) Browse to CD in Explorer

3) Double-click on setup.exe

Instead, a lot of them seemed to put more effort and energy into their flashy autorun screens than they did in their software.

Glasses-free 3D TV sales stumble

Darryl

Getting quieter

You notice that there's a lot less hype over 3D lately? I think more than a few of the manufacturers and retailers saw the dismal pre-Christmas sales and realized that it's nowhere near as huge as they predicted (hoped?) it would be.

Now if they can just start releasing things in a 2D version for theatres again, I might actually go back to the movies once in a while.
