RIM swallows $485m charge to clear PlayBook tablet mountain

Philippe
FAIL

Why would anyone wants this?

I have tried the thing in an airport some time ago and it was linked to a BB so it had e-mail.

I have found it extremely limited, too small.

Yes it was quick but it felt so basic and unfinished...

I don't know why anyone would spend the money when there are better alternative out there with a future?

What am I missing?

UK nuclear: Walking into darkness with eyes screwed shut

Philippe
FAIL

We forgot how to do Nuclear and it won't come back.

In France and in Finland they are try to build 3rd Generation reactors.

Well3 and 6 years later, 7 Billion euros later we still don't know when production will start.

Yes they give you a date 2012, then it's 2014 then it's 2017 and tax payers forks out for the bill.

there is no ennd in sight.

As to operate one of those the day we even get them to work, we don't have anyone not close to retirement age willing to work in the nuclear industry.

Nuclear might well be the best way forward but if nobody wants to work in a powerplant then what is the point in having one?

Ultrabooks will rescue PC industry – beancounters

Philippe
FAIL

History will remember Ultrabooks as intel biggest Fail

All those manufacturers are desperately trying to bring the price of those devices down and intel is helping them out with cash and R&D support.

it won't be long before one of those guys wakes up and use all that free R&D with a Tegra3 or similar and slap windows 8 for ARM on it..

if the market for Ultrabooks doesnt pickup by the time Win8 is out. Intel will fail and will have been the maker of his own downfall...

Apple's iPod: ten years old

Philippe
Happy

I remember thinking "Why would I want that?" when Apple launched it.

It was such a good product and such an obvious one in hindsights.

I have to say i am very disappointed by the replacement of "iPod" by "music" on iOS5.

Why? this is such an obvious term to identify music playing these days..

It's an age thing

My 14 years old daughter called it "pretty cool" but not as cool as the "great marvellous" and my 7 years old son called it " really cool".

i think this thing is rather boring.

Over the last few weeks I ve seen the "great marvellous" spread like wildfire around the country.

I can't see this being used by anyone, ever..

What's not in the iPhone 4S ... and why

Can we have a clear "non partisan" analysis of that Voice control thing?

I had voice control 7 years ago on my Nokia : i said:"Call Home." and it called Home.

and i had a bit more than that for a while on the iPhone too.

I can't say i had that on my blackberry because i have never, ever, managed to get it to do what i was telling it to do.

Voice control was never really accurate but it does the job.

What i dont have is something which understands context, which understand 3 languages, different way of asking questions and does not seem too bothered by accent and background noises.

Why do media keep talking about them?

Re:Pot Kettle 0x000000

Anon, you might want to review the details of the lawsuit.

Apple are mainly suing for breach of copyright. There are very few patents being mentioned in the lawsuit. (bouncing list springs to mind)

Copyright is about creation/design etc. not invention. Only a fool would say that the Galaxy isn't a copy of the iPhone 3G and that the Galaxy SII isnt a copy of the iPhone4.

Sammy was sad enough to copy the Album icon on it. Come on

At least HTC doesn't need to copy in order to be successful.

What more do we really need?

I have seen the 4 inch rumors and i am not convinced.

-I agree that 3.5 inch got old but 3.7 as on most Samsung seems just right. (anything above is just dumb 4.3 is just a battery emptying nonsense.)

-Dual core yep why not?

-NFC when there is a proper format and use for it ?OK whatever.

-Price needs trimming (yeah i know dream on..)

-Camera 12p , i agree with Jim with a small lense it just sucks. I'd rather have a better 5MP

-Better exchange integration and multitasking.. absolutely.

In a nutshell, i don't think the time as being right for any major changes. The company I work for is buying those to replace BB at a impressive pace and nobody is saying :" I wish it had X and Y".

It's the software that needs updating. the rest is fine.

Windows 7 customers hit by service pack 1 install 'fatal error' flaws

Mixed bag of experience here..

My install of SP1 on my daughter Win7 pro running PC was a mixed bag.

On one hand, the Safari browser has slowed to a crawl and I had to install 5.0.1 to restore a bit of speed. On the other hand the "shut down" function which had ceased to work for some reasons weeks ago forcing me to use hibernate is now working again.

Funny though.

No word about multi carrier policy in Europe versus two carriers (since one month) in the States.

No analysis of business customers not wanting to support "one more operating system".

Nothing about the regular OS update failures experienced by the Android beta users. (i am thinking German OS on UK phones, thank you O2).

Nothing about UK, French and German press obvious biais towards the iOS plateform

I am a bit disappointed.

Microsoft has reached a point where they have a strategy, (.net, silverlight, visual studio, xna),

Apple to shrink MacBook Air

Philippe
Happy

11.6 is a bit too small 12 inch

I can absolutely see the point of going smaller.

Three 13.3 incher is one too many. However i wouldn't go all the way down to 11.6 inch.

Probably 12 would be the best fit.

It would bring back the original powerbook 12 size and could justify the "new air" moniker.

I wish they shrink the price a bit two...and add one USB plug.

Philippe
Stop

Takuhii stop the senseless bashing

"and banning other apps just because they have words like Pad of use the "i" in there names is pure lunacy!!"

Takuhii,

you obviously did not studied laws or worked in a marketing department. If i paid good money to register and/or use names such as Pad an iWhatever in my products i surely wants to keep the privilege for my own products especially if i control the market place.

In a more practical way, as a user, if you see a iWhatever you'd think the product is related to Apple and blame them if it fails.

There is no lunacy here. Just a company protecting his products.

Welcome

He has a point in the corporate world

My company which shall remain nameless has tens of thousand of Desktops and Laptops.

We just entirely stopped our refresh program with a view to move to netbook and use thin clients type solutions. The hardware cost will be more than half.

On the go people have a netbook and at the office they plug into a station with keyboard, screen, and mouse and run Windows server 2008 virtualixed.

A 90% netbook world, nope but a 50% absolutely.

I for one welcome our new netbook overlord..
