You're forgetting one small detail.

Take one internal combustion powered and one electric powered vehicle, run both across their full range, until both are empty. Yes, you may get a similar distance.

Now comes the crunch. Recharge time.

At the same time you plug the electric car in, start to fill the internal combustion vehicle with fuel.

Five-ten minutes later, when the internal combustion vehicle's full of juice, unplug the electric car.

Let's go...

Mind if I take the internal combustion vehicle for this second round?

I doubt you'll get off the bottom of the motorway sliproad - whilst I'll be ready for another full range.

Do these idiots really not have the most basic clue? I despair. What will it take to persuade them that IT DOESN'T MATTER WHERE THE MEDIA IS - the media's irrelevant. The data is the important thing - and it must be considered to be compromised.

Perhaps scariest - what happens if/when they do find the CDs? Do they say "Oh, that's OK, then. The data's safe again"...? How many man-hours are being wasted on this farce?

Am I missing something?

MS have issued an update to Windows Update that MUST, MUST, MUST, MUST be applied *NOW*. It's so critical that it's applied now that it's going to be applied whether you want it or not. Next week isn't good enough. Before the next updates you do apply isn't good enough.

So, ummm... what happens in six months time when somebody reinstalls Windows from the OEM install CD that came with their machine several years ago...? Will they be able to install this update then? Or will they be barred from Windows Update completely, and left with an unpatched pre-SP1 install...?

With install keys being specific to and incompatible between "genuine MS", licence scheme and different branded OEM install CDs, there's no easy way to start from a post-hyper-critical-update CD without a lot of fannying about building slipstreamed media, so there's going to be an awful lot of very broken copies of XP in short order.

Is this a sneaky plan to get people to upgrade to Vista after all...?

French court says non to pre-loaded Windows on Acer laptop

I'm not sure it's quite going to work like that...

If the PC manufacturers can't pre-load apps from <insert umpty-seven software vendors>, then they're going to miss out on Quite A Lot Of Revenue from those vendors.

(http://www.theregister.com/2006/02/08/dell_pre-loads_google_toolbar/ for an example - $1bn over 3yrs to have the Google Toolbar preloaded on Dells)

So if they don't get that revenue from the software, where are they going to get it from? Yup, they'll add it onto the retail price.

Oh - and to Daniel van Niekerk - you may like to rethink that analogy... If Peugeot don't paint the car, they won't offer a paint or anti-corrosion warranty, just as Acer/Dell/Etc won't support the OS if it's not pre-installed.

The difference being, of course, that the paint warranty might be useful in the first place...
