In general, releasing or maintaining open source generates zero income so there's no backup plan when something like this happens. Before open source came along programmers wrote, supported, and documented the whole damn thing - then open source appeared and programmers found their life a little easier, they moved on to new jobs and were replaced by less skilled people who didn't need to understand everything, they just needed to be able to compile it.
It's like calling yourself a "baker" when all you do is pour a box of mix into a bread machine.
