Actually it is. You wrote that copyright doesn't exist in trivialities. It also doesn't exist in methods or procedures.

To use your example:

American dogs are trained with American English words that mean the same thing to the dog.

German dogs are trained with German words that mean the same thing to the dog.

Java uses a particular API to call functions that perform math operations.

C uses a particular API to call functions that perform math operations.

Java API == American dog training

C API == German dog training
