The simplest 'fix' for 32-bit is to treat the integer as unsigned (but possibly -1 as special error case)

That would require replacing all occurrences of -1 in time tests (but no others whatsoever) with *HiVal. Good luck with editing, compiling and testing. Besides that, it would make it rather difficult to store dates preceding the 01-01-1970.
