You're right, of course: the only people who look at steam locomotives with nostalgia are those who didn't have to operate them. But we're talking about how long it takes to re-start an engine that has no fault. Solving that doesn't need reversion to steam power, as you suggest. It needs more careful thought in design. In that, we seem to have gone backwards ("...371 trains to be cancelled, 220 to be part-cancelled and 873 to be delayed").
