It’s actually the opposite problem. Sabadell have successfully converted their core system twice, and, successfully absorbed five or six smaller banks. I think the problem was hubris and overconfidence.

P.S. is it just me but shouldn’t we worry that 10-15% of retail banking is owned by Spanish companies. I worry as a Spanish resident that the local economy will get sucked into the inevitable collapse the UK property market.
