Crossing 10M from the nearest crossing is a sign of stupidity, but not a crime.

Actually, as you should know, here in Germany it is.

But I think the risks are outsize in the US where both road planning and the law massively favour cars making life for pedestrians particularly dangerous, because motorists so rarely see them. Even in supposedly "friendly" places such as Portland in Oregon, RTAs involving non-motorised vehicles are much higher than in Europe.
