Franco gained power in a military coup and subsequent civil war which eliminated the democratic Second Spanish Republic. The idea that Spain could have become a Soviet client state is absurd. Yes, the republic elected trade unionists and socialists . . . just like the UK . . . but Franco's drive was power, not politics.
My great grandfather was arrested by the fascists while in his 70's, not for being an active fighter or even a protester, but for being outspoken in his views on the civil war. He was sent to a concentration camp and is in some unmarked grave.
