Awk precedes Perl by at least a decade. As in Aho - Weinberger - Kernighan. Bell Labs and UNIX.
Aho as in egrep and fgrep and the Dragon Book. If you don't write compilers for a living you don't need to know what that is. And it's pretty outdated at this point, but it was the go-to reference for compiler implementations for quite a while.
Weinberger as in FORTRAN 77, digital photography and then Google.
Kernighan as in C.
