Unless you're writing a compiler from scratch, you don't need flex/bison to parse log files.
Beware the misleading friendliness of Perl regexp. Might not always do what you thought it would.
In one of my previous jobs I was a "mentor" for one of our summer interns. I made him learn flex and bison (O'Reilly book) because we had to parse some relatively unstructured text files. He didn't know flex/bison.
He learned flex/bison in 3 days and in another 5 he had the parser written, done, debugged, tested and checked with the static analyzer.
And this was a Junior year undergrad intern.
