OK, so I'm sure that none of this was done by any of the hardware designers to purposely reduce security; but, perhaps because I'm cynical, what runs through my mind immediately is that the whole "cloud" thing was pushed to get big Corp to spend on hardware with the expectation that the "next big thing" would be the push to run all your own hardware. I do think that the push to cloud may have hit this security roadblock sooner than the chip sellers would have liked.
