Re: COBOL

We have a vendor who substitutes brute force, ignorance, and the ever useful excuse of 'throw more hardware at it' to try and solve design issues with their software. One of our major LOB applications uses some truly terrible SQL queries when building reports- I'm talking 'select star from star' and using the WHERE clause to filter it down to what they want, against a 600 GB+ dataset, and then bitch about why the stupid expensive (and massively over powered) hardware we bought is running like molasses on a cold winters day. Oh, and they've either never put an index on the dataset, or they are indexing EVERYTHING, INCLUDING THE INDEXES. (which is technically impossible- I'm not sure how they did it, either.)
