Maybe it's just me, but what you've described sounds (in principle) to me a lot like what I used to do with Bitnami a few years ago. I was interested in the idea of virtual appliances (to coin a phrase) but didn't have the skills or time or funding to do it myself, so I found ones that someone had prepared earlier.

But it got stomped on by the IT Department, 'cos I was a developer and couldn't be trusted with admin privileges to install anything or even boot a not yet IT-approved (and never will be) system image.

Anyway, go read about Bitnami, and if there are others similar (or better), maybe they'd be of interest to readers here too.
