On my keyboard the backlash is a single key, the slash is a shifted key above 7, which is one of the key "farer away". Like C, Unix was too much developed around US-only standards (my keyboard doesn't even show curly braces, which requires to press three/four keys to type them...). And whatever Unix did, forty years later it may just be an outdated standard today, no matter how necessary back in those old days. After all, telephones used to have rotary dials, we got rid of them....
