Of course, until recently the food eaten out in most of the UK wasn't worth taking home to be enjoyed later. There is a reason that Blighty has an international culinary reputation as "The island where good ingredients go to die" ... although this is changing, and rather quickly.
As a side note, originally the food wasn't scrapped. Even as late as the early 1980s, larger hotels and restaurants put the scraps into the pig bins. Nice even trade, farmer takes away scraps & returns sausages, proper bacon, etc. Win-win. Why do I have an 'orrible feeling that this logical practice is illegal nowadays?
