I'm not really sure that's entirely right. I mean, after WW2 Labour nationalised every industry that was unionised. Coal mining, shipbuilding, aircraft manufacturing, car manufacturing, electricity generation, electricity distribution, railways, you name it.
The country went bust as a result of owning every loss making industry in the UK, the country went to the IMF with a begging bowl for a loan, and Labour were booted out of office replaced by the Conservatives. Their solution was to declare that the UK government had no business trying to run every loss making business in the country, and they simply privatised everything that Labour had nationalised, so the companies losing money was a problem with that company going bankrupt rather than the entire country going bankrupt.
Labour clearly agreed with this policy privately if not publically, since they didn't extend any help to these once nationalised companies when they were in power even when they asked for help and haven't nationalised anything since...
