That's a poor example, banks have lots of downtime. Just look at the story about ING which was posted on the register just a few days ago. Result is that people won't be able to access their account anymore for a few hours. It may be an issue for a few people that need to get something done quick, but normally it's only a small nuisance. And card payments are automatically approved up to a certain amount if the bank servers are down, so you can still pay in the shops.
I'd personally rather have my bank down for 24 hours than my internet connection.
