People just think you hit it with a hammer, but there is an art to assessing which hammer to use and exactly how much excessive force to apply

After switching an important server back on after a scheduled power-off, its main data disc refused to spin up. The head of IT came into the server room to see me holding a hammer next to the hard drive which was balanced in my hand. He asked if I really was going to hit the HD with a hammer. "Yes" I replied as his face started turning white. A light tap on the side of the HD was enough to loosen the bearings and allow the disc to spin up.
