If the Cthulhu like hairball that was OpenSSL can be saved virtually any code base can be with enough effort. The one exception that immediately comes to mind (besides some I have seen in private industry) is Netscape 4.7.2. Never seen a non 3D user land app with just regular user permissions crash an IRIX box before it. No surprise that they open sourced it in desperation (one of the first closed to open source commercial products) and the code was almost immediately thrown out.
