Using lots of asterisks was a common habit on monochromatic terminals - before even text editors could color-syntax code. You need a way to easily tell what was code, and what was comment. Far less need today of "boxing" comments as they will be visualized in a different way.

Unless you're a true Luddite and refuse to use any modern editor and use a syntax highlighter.
