i think we're talking at cross purposes. Yes component production was well distributed into small artisan factories - but the actual aircraft assembly had to be done at an airfield (for obvious reasons.....) and those sites were limited in number.

For the Spitfire assembly you had the Supermarine factories, Westlands (at Yeovil) and the largest Castle Bromwich plant (not West Brom - I made a typo there).

My mother built the port inner wing boxes for the Westland ones, her bridesmaid built the starboard ones
