While I completely agree that the submitted code should be struck down and never see the light of day again the way it was done was wrong. Having a go at your staff is rarely, if ever, the way to get the best out of them. Sure Linus didn't actually name names but anyone who cared could go and look up who was being torn off a strip so this is as good as a public humiliation. I personally wouldn't contribute to a project with someone like that at the wheel and I can't believe I'm the only one that feels that way.
