"They" has gained common usage as a non-gender specific pronoun these days.

"These days" is wrong. The singular-they usage in English is older than Modern English.

Prescriptivists who claim it's "wrong" are merely demonstrating their ignorance of the language they claim to be defending. As is generally the case with prescriptivists, of course.
