Perhaps is it the gazillion copies of svchost that seem to spring up out of nowhere and consume lots and lots of CPU that is to blame?
They can't all be doing the same thing?
As has been said, there is a lot of old cruft in the Windows OS that should have been consigned to the great bit bucket in the sky years ago.
Bring back the ASR-33's and acoustic couplers. No graphics nonsense with them.
