Basically the way I've worked since 2000 (VMware Workstation v1.0.x). Docker is headed that way and there's been some kicking and screaming (CoreOS people) already. Given that the general trend is towards (near) total automation, your admins are going to be spending time getting the VM/container specifications right and doing the same with Ansible/Puppet/Chef (ad nauseum).
Those of us that really, really love to get in there and tinker, much like the (classic) car buffs, are naturally going to kick and scream, down tools, and go off for a bottle of their least favorite alcoholic poison.
