Seconding the 'Compatability != ABI. Compatability == Userland' foreverfact.

The organisational benefits far outweigh the inconvenience (ask any MMO raid that has to wait for afk members). You aren't kept down by them, they have to keep up with you. There are *more* of them than there are you, so distributing this responsibility to them, forcing them to be aware of their (naturally hazardous) environment seems perfectly sensible to me.

This means code without an active maintainer naturally dies. I'm afraid this is healthy.
