Linux kernel dev has gone well and truly corporate – report

Re: systemd

A plausible scenario is that systemd accelerates mainstream adoption of GNU/Linux on desktops and mobiles over the next few years – if only because it enforces a higher degree of conformity among the elements comprising a Linux system than exists now: fragmentation has frequently been cited as a major reason why 'the average user' hasn't come to Linux in droves, and hence why big name software is still very scarce (or, that reasoning but the other way around). Systemd's tighter control over the operating system will eventually have the side-effect of eroding the more glaring disparities across mainstream distros and maybe even attract some commercial softwares along the way. The thing is, Linux has grown tired of being just a kernel, and whether it realizes this or not, it wants to pop its husk and strive for something bigger. Systemd is another step in Linux evolution. Time will tell if it's an appendage in aiding its persistence, or one abetting its own demise. So I recommend all the people sit back, smoke a big one, and think about other things for a little while.
