Actually, there are two candidates.
1. carbon nanofiber
2. diamond whisker fibers.
#1 current problem is length. We don't yet know how to make a fiber longer than a few millimeters at a time.
#2 is even shorter at this time, though tests show it even stronger than nanofibers.
