The only actuary I know uses Excel (because at the end of the day stuff has to be reported to management) which he checks using an HP-12C financial calculator.

I only mention this to gratuitously mention the HP-12C which everyone here should have at least one of. And if those Economists were to use one instead of whichever language tops the poll in the paper, they would be (a) less wrong in whatever figures they concoct and (b) all-round nicer human beings. Yes the 12C is that good. Buy one now...
