The guy that died was a senior Guards officer, as well as a scientist. He was also a very significant figure in his field of expertise, and not someone that could be easily replaced. So I can't see why Iran would sacrifice a highly specialised and ideologically committed scientist for propaganda reasons.
After seeing several high-ranked officers and scientists running off to the US, I wouldn't be so sure about that. Ever since Nobel, scientists are sometimes touchy when it comes to creating weapons, and those might have been the cases here. In which case, killing them would achieve two goals: stopping the dissent they might have started to spread AND getting another excuse for weapon program, by blaming the West (or Israel).
Of course, this could also be done by internal opposition, aided by said West...

These are Europeans (essentially) fighting for the survival of their state. I have zero doubt they have a team of people who speak persian better than the average persian. Who know more about the persian tribe they claim to be from than the average tribe member.
Or maybe they claim to be afghanis who are "doing trade" in Tehran. Maybe trading Austrian precision rifles for the ability to access the Iranian territory. Those rifles being used by tribes in Iraq to hit the bastard-Europeans who conquered that country recently.
If they only applied that level of skill to the official government I am sure they would be on friendly terms with the people in their immediate vicinity. But stealing land will only fuel this fire indefinitely.
