back to article Siberian crooks dev'd custom malware in ATM slurp heist scheme

Russian cybercrooks contracted a virus writer to develop custom-made malware before launching a plot to loot compromised ATM machines. Although the gang – mostly from Yakutsk, a mid-sized city close to the Artic Circle in Siberia – were ultimately caught, the sophistication, planning and investment that went into their plot …

    Sounds like...

... good old police work. Which is nice.

What is not so nice is that you can't expect banks to take this as a wake-up call. Their main security has been in obscurity and denial, or maybe paying off the victims. That's all there is to it, fancy tech notwithstanding. The automated infrastructure models are very much copies of a 19th century paper bank.

      However, theres a big difference

19th century bankers exercised rather more due diligence and, in total contrast to the current shower, weren't totally committed to the fifty bucks.

      Sounds more like...

Good old non-payment of bribes - not for nothing do words like 'kleptocracy' get used about governments in that part of the world. Their big mistake was being too arrogant to not bring in an Interior Ministry bloke of the correct rank for a percentage.

        Bribe would be too risky

"bring in an Interior Ministry bloke of the correct rank for a percentage."

#1. How are they supposed to figure what the "correct rank" is supposed to be?

#2. Going to the government with the scheme is the same as telling the police you are going to rob a bank!? All proof they need to lock them up.

#3. What if the govt. plays "entrapment" and takes the bribe so that they can build a rapport with the criminals to eventually take them down?

    what

so, um, what could these crooks have DONE with a large amount of stolen money in far northern Siberia? I mean, how many reindeer or yak does a fellow really need?

Although I supposed the could use the money to leave Siberia.

    banks view of IT

clearly banks don't see IT as important, their head of IT is obviously classified as a junior member of staff - if he was considered a senior banker then he'd have been above the law and allowed to just take however much money he wanted...

      What's more

They see sticking ATMs on a normal corporate network as "convenient" rather than "a f*cking great security breach just itching to happen".

        @Mark 65

Do you seriously think that ATMs sit on the same network as the rest of the bank's systems? I've been working in Financial Services IT for over 15 years and I have never even anecdotally heard of this.

    Tanks Mr. Assange

You see, the Wikileaks effect is already helping. The Russians are now going to crack down on the Mafia, at last! Can't understand why they started in Siberia though....

Fortunately? You know it's a lot easier to catch the crooks

when they contact another branch of your government to do the heavy lifting on the dirty work.
