back to article PARIS launch tomorrow come hell or high water

The Paper Aircraft Released Into Space team would like to apologise to those Reg readers who were hanging round their monitors on Tuesday expecting some form of PARIS launch activity. In the event, a series of technical problems forced a last-minute scrub. Most of these were minor glitches, but rather more seriously, the team' …

    Semana de pena??

Is 'semana de pena' as rude as it sounds?

    Paris wants to know.

    1. Vincent Ballard

      No

"Semana de pena" means "week of sadness". However, what the article says is "esta semana de Peña Negra" - "this week from Black Rock".

    Charity Fundraising Auction?

So when does the bidding for Vulture 1 start?

I'd spend £20 for PARIS to come over to my house...

    Nothing ventured

    ...nothing gained!

Technical glitches... too much brandy I think!

Anyway - best of luck tomorrow, we're all waiting with bated breath!

    Duct Tape?

Some of the covering looks suspicioulsy like duct tape.

Is this allowed under the rules? Or is duct tape officially recognised as a paper derivative?

    1. Sir Sham Cad

      Yes, Duct tape.

But only on the main payload.

Buitre 1 itself is tape free being only paper, epoxy and playmobil, as it should be.

      Dealing with bureaucrats

IIRC it was a friendly local who arranged permission from AENA for the flight.

    Godspeed Lester

Hope all is well, awaiting results with breathless anticipation. By the way please identifiy the brave lad actually riding PARIS to her climax... I know its not the Stig, a bit to short for F1.

    Utter Bollocks, Lester!!

    Problem isn't the wind.

It's the simple fact your boss won't let you and your team spend any money on cheap plonk. i.e., you can't get wasted on company money any more ....You're fooling nobody!

Seriously, good luck for tomorrow. It's a real shame the camera wimped out, that would've been epic footage. (Why not pop it in anyway, just in case?).

    I'll be on regular updates.

-Cheers, I think it'll work. Nicely.

    John Oates?

Bloody hell. He's obviously had some work done. Was Daryl Hall the one who took the photo?

    Test flights?

No mention of any test flights - surely any model aeroplane needs to be test flown to trim the CG and aerodynamic surfaces? How do we know this thing is going to fly at all? On the other hand, looking at the photos, any test flight is probably *not* going to be a non-destructive test :-)

    English Translation

And for those not versed in our beautiful Lengua Española, here's my unofficial translation of the local rag's article:

    The Vulture I didn't fly.

The flight of the paper airplane that was supposed to launch this weekend from Peña Negra, was suspended due to strong wind gusts from the west that prevented the launch of the carrier balloon; however, this did not stop the christening of the plane which is to take photographic shots and video of the surroundings for an English enterprise. The event has been delayed until the next week.

    Go Paris!

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth

And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings

Sunward I’ve climbed and joined the tumbling mirth

of sun-split clouds, and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of wheeled and soared and swung

High in the sunlit silence. Hovering there

I’ve chased the shouting wind along and flung

My eager craft through footless halls of air.

Up up the long delirious burning blue

I’ve topped the wind swept heights with easy grace

Where never lark nor even eagle flew

And while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod

The high untrespassed sanctity of space

Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

    Good luck for the flight!

    Godspeed, Paris!!

And tomorrow I hope to hear the (non-tabloid) story on how you were seen high as a kite on the Costa del Sol!!

      Alert

      Hope not

Leaving aside questions of how likely that is, if the glide ratio is that good then the camera's going to end up under a couple of hundred metres of Med. That would be a bit disappointing.

    I reckon you're milking PARIS

perhaps the delay is a publicity ruse to build the tension to a climax.

You probably got it from a planning manual called the 'Joy Of Techs' or something similar.

Fingers crossed it's not a flop.
