back to article Iran boasts of Stuxnet 'nuclear spies' arrests

Iran claims to have arrested spies it blames for planting the infamous Stuxnet worm on its network and attempting to clobber its Bushehr nuclear power plant. Heydar Moslehi, Iran's intelligence minister, told the semi-official Mehr news agency that the country had arrested an unspecified number of "nuclear spies" (nationality …

    By sheer coincidence

The arrested spies, no doubt the Iranian government will claim, are supporters of the opposition candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi who claimed the last Iranian Presidential election was rigged and protested last summer.

    Imagine that!

    myrtus ?

Alternatively it could refer to My RTUs where RTU means Remote Terminal Units which amazing enough is what the remote Siemens devices are known as.

Perhaps it was the Myans due to the date the worm is coded to self terminate.

Theres a few analyses out there

Pluto in Capricorn squares off against Uranus in Aries?

Pluto in Capricorn squaring off against Uranus in Aries is an annual event. Who cares? The programmer should have picked a less frequent event date, such as December 21 2012, the first day of the 14th Mayan b'ak'tun.

    A more likely explanation

Some dumbass in the plant loaded up a USB stick with photos, took them off to a print centre where their USB was infected and then they plugged it into their workplace where the infection carried on its merry way.

Scenarios like this happen in the supposedly tech savvy West so I imagine it happens a great deal more in places like Iran. The issue was probably compounded by lack of AV software or firewalls.

No conspiracy required, just the product of human ignorance crossing paths with a piece of malware.

      Don't normally recommend Symantec but

they have a Stuxnet whitepaper which pretty much proves this isn't your common or garden SQL Slammer or even Conficker, whatever DrXym and others of a similarly blind nature may think.

See also an outfit called Langner. You know where to look. You were given eyes and a brain, just use them before they stop working.

    Or maybe ...

It's smoke and mirrors, trying to misdirect from the real problem.

That problem being that the total fucking numpties in charge have not only approved of using Microsoft software for SCADA, but have ALSO approved of attaching said systems to TheInternetAtLarge[1].

The cluelessness being displayed at national levels is absolutely breathtaking.

      But then again

"That problem being that the total fucking numpties in charge have not only approved of using Microsoft software for SCADA,"

They didn't. The software to program the PLCs which run SCADA runs on windows, which is not the same.

"but have ALSO approved of attaching said systems to TheInternetAtLarge[1]."

They didn't, go and read some of the analysis. Look at the proliferation vectors.
