Microsoft is prepping Windows mobile developers for October's debut of Windows Phone 7. The final set of developer tools for Windows Phone 7 will drop on September 16 withp> what the company on Monday called "minor" breaking changes from the beta tools available now. This includes several "highly requested" Silverlight …
They were doing okay in the mobile market, but like IE they let it stagnate for too long, had no ideas on where to move too. All the other phone platforms were just as clunky and tired.
Now that there's Android and iPhone around Microsoft has plenty of competitors ideas to innovate into their product.
They really haven't learnt, have they?
Android is the fastest growing phone OS because it's open, not because Google have to give approval to anything that needs to happen. If I want to download 11MB OTA then that's between my phone carrier and me, not Microsloth.
I want it to work - I really do - because competition is better than not, but MS just seem to be very good lately of shooting themselves in the foot, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, and other relevant metaphors!
"Have you not noticed how successful the Apple AppStore is?"
Compared to what exactly?
The android store will catch up and overtake at the speed the phones are selling.
And as a developer, surely you would want your app on as many stores as possible to maximise your revenue?
Blackberry also has the AppWorld, Android has the Marketplace. While I know that some rooted Android handsets can run cracked versions of apps, the BB doesn't have this problem. The advantage on their quasi-open model is that you can sell on the AppWorld, or simply sell it anywhere else if you want to. This gave me the advantage of buying apps even when AppWorld wasn't selling me apps; Mexico was a "free app only" region until recently.
While I can't attest for AppWorld figures, I do know that a couple of apps sell really well, even outside of the AppWorld store.
