  Usage of the different IM platform varies a lot by country. The UK is really dominated by MSN, while their penetration in the US is much lower and more users still use AIM and Yahoo. I would guess that Europe uses more Yahoo than the UK, with odd things like GaduGadu still dominating in Poland. No idea about non-western countries, although good character set support may well be an issue that drives users to specific platforms.
  
  The other issue is which clients get included with / are easily available for which mobile phone. I know that WinMo comes with an MSN client, but I don't remember any client supplied with Android or iPhone. Many of the more effective clients like Meebo, which handles all the protocols in one screen probably register as HTTP traffic anyway.

FTP going the same way as GOPHER

In the context of a study on mobile use, which is probably 95% Facebook, Youtube and p0rno, that's hardly surprising is it? I can't think of many uses for FTP on a mobile device.

I'm sure FTP's usage on the desktop is shrinking too but that's a whole different kettle of fish (i.e. it's use is dropping because it's been superseded, by SFTP for example).

P2P? REALLY?

How is P2P making on to mobile phones? There's only like 2 clients out there, and their for WinMo which I personally use, but I thought everyone in the world used iPhones? The only thing I can figure for that much percentage of P2P of the pie would be that a few users using tethering are sucking down a lot of bandwidth.
