back to article Googlephone debuts Jan. 5, says everyone but Google

A Tuesday press-conference invitation and a T-Mobile leak make it ninety-nine per cent certain that Google will announce its Android-based Googlephone Nexus One smartphone at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 5, at its Mountain View Googleplex. This morning, a carefully selected slice of the tech press received a short but sweet …

    Looks tasty

I've been waiting for an Android phone to come along that actually had some beef to back up the OS [not been terribly impressed with the G1/G2 et al] and that looks substantially tastier.

Will have to see what the plan is for UK sales of course, but design wise it looks very nice indeed - nice, clean and simple. To my eyes it makes the iPhone look a bit dated.

Looking forward to this getting a general release and being given the once over by the tech press to see what they make of it.

Oh, and what our latino friend needs to do is set the camera down somewhere, and zoom in on the phone from a distance to sort out the DOF issues, of course.

      Looks boring

I agree that the iPhone looks dated now (esp the interface). But ooh'ek the google phone looks beyond dated. The case? LOL. The interface we seen in the vid? ROFL. Seriously. Deee, aahe, teee, eee, aytch. These google guys really are in a different plain design wise with everything they do. Not a good plain either.

I'd find it easier to take you seriously...

If you knew the difference between plain and plane.

The iphone does look dated, the Android UI doesn't to me, it is at least customisable. They do need to work on the case tho', although I said that about the Hero and now I love the 'chin', some times looks are deceiving, the Hero 'chin' has stopped me dropping my phone countless times while typing/taking photos.

    Price??????

Any actual real info, like the price? Also, can folks just move their SIM card over like other phones, or do we have to sign up for an abusive "Googlized" rate plan?

    I'm torn now...

I have been on the lookout for a new phone for a while, and after not seeing any decent android phones I was starting to consider the Nokia N900.

    But now I'm not sure.

Guess I'll have to wait a bit longer to see some reviews of the actual handset.

    What?

    The iPhone looks dated?

    Cretinous remark.

      WTF?

      But it does look dated

What the UI still looks front of the field to you?

    2. Rob McDougall

      erm...

It does ! It's a groundbreaking, iconic design but the OS is now about 3 years old...

I've not had an android phone, but every time I've played with one I've been very impressed with what they can squeeze out of the phone's CPU... I dare say the UI is a little more functional than Apple's. I was sold immediately when I saw on/off switches for WiFi, Bluetooth etc could be added to the home screen...

        wifi/bluetooth on the home screen

Really? My 2007 WinMo 6.0 smartphone had it. On ye olde tymes when Windows phone was called Windows CE and it had no GSM/3G modem surprisingly you could turn on/off both wifi and bluetooth right on the home screen too!

And Android being able to squeeze out CPU? I can play MPEG4-ASP (xvid) movies/shows without conversion and/or rescaling on my 240MHz phone. Oh wait! It doesn't use Java.

      The iPhone IS dated

It's a design that's been around since 2007, which in technology terms is like 20 years. Also, the design was probably originally penned in 2006, or 2005. So yes, the iPhone does look dated, because it is dated.

That's not to say it isn't pretty. There are plenty of pretty cars out there that are a dated design that you wouldn't see rolling off the production lines today.

I think it will be a long time before Apple change anything radically with the design of the iPhone though. Why would they? It still sells by the warehouse full... and while they keep the same shell and interface, they can distribute new models to their staff for them to use in the real world and nobody is any the wiser as to the features and specs that are hidden within it... which makes His Royal Jobsiness look better when he reveals it all to a standing ovation.

    All Hype

Google do not produce the hardware.

Google do not provide the network

Most of the OS is Linux which is the work other people.

    What's left? Just Google spyware.

    Wrong customer

Google's customer is neither the end user, nor the carrier. It is their paying advertisers. So we will want to view the ecosystem in a slightly different manner. However Motorola might view things in a somewhat different manner. They have bet the farm on Android, at least as far as smart phones go. If Motorola decide the Nexus is screwing them over it may begin to precipitate a split in the Android ecosystem. Google have their own specific agenda, but it doesn't actually fit with that of any of their partners. For everyone to work out how they get their slice of the action out of smartphones is very much an evolving issue. In the past it was easy, they just wanted some of your money. Google however would seem to prefer your soul.

    Interesting

Been looking for a new phone for when my contracts up...and while this looks very tasty, am curious if any of the providers will pick it up on contract giving the phone away on the cheap. Fine buy off Google and buy my own contract, but am quiet comfortable with the good ol' pay my fee and pay off the phone over the next year way. Otherwise it's looking like Droid or N900 so far...some interesting movements thats for sure though in devices at the moment.

    Here we go again

The iPhone is dead now because the new:

    Blackberry - errrr, I mean..........

The Palm Pre - No, hang on...............

The Nokia - Ha Ha just joking...........

    Wait, I meant to say,

The Motorola Droid.........No........ I've really got it this time.....

The iPhone is dead because of the almighty Google Phone.

And yet it still lives, and lives strong.

    Keep trying and wishing.

Happy New Year to the Registry Nerdcore.

    Price?

Well a good try I suppose, but it is *way* too expensive - Google are clearly happy tocontinue the tradition of massively overpriced hardware given whats inside the case - I thought that they might be daring enough to give us a $100 unlocked phone (which has been rumoured in previous press). I am unimpressed -what's the incentive to own this over an iPhone again?

Does Google get my call records?

Tell me, I call people, does Google help itself to that data? I'm still reminded of Schmitts 'if you want to keep it private you probably shouldn't be doing it' comment.

I know it helps itself to my search data, and to my usage data and pretty much every other data.

VAT alone will push it to 400. American prices don't include sales tax.
