back to article 'Black box for buses' datachip survives 900° conflag

Dastardly terrorists and/or incompetent drivers can no longer hope that the evidence of their catastrophic misdeeds, recorded by security cameras aboard public transport, will be erased in the hellish conflagrations following train wrecks and bus crashes. That's because the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has …

    a cheaper solution

Use the money to buy hospital equipment, school equipment and so on and send them to the Middle East, no strings attached, but with a lot of good diplomacy.

      Details Please

"No Strings Attached" aid to the Middle East would end up in the hands of the organized criminal gangs known as "freedom fighters". How exactly would that help????

    Non-terrorist bus drivers, beware

With the Electronic Big Brother watching, your days of speeding like a lunatic and endangering your passengers are coming to an end.

    Stop

    So...

The driver and all the passengers are (literally) toast, but we know which one of the buggers dun it, and we'll make sure he never does it again... Oh, wait.

    Wow

So now the next time a bus blows up, you'll have good quality pictures which won't actually help in any way, but you get nice pictures for the evening news.

    Not so secret or new

Having seen a "black box" retrieved from a ship after it went down blazing, I doubt this is very new tech.

Capsule with an SSD with clever engineering stuff to control pressure, cooling features etc (If it's Chinese possibly a nice helpful asbestos layer as well...).

Bit of shockproofing for the explosion.

Unlike for aero, cost's a big factor in shipping, and the units are relatively cheap now.

    New on Buses I guess.

    A public transport thing surely?

Yet another excuse not to get on a bus. I mean - who would want their slow motion, toppling, metal crunching, fiery and sliding death to end up on that internet thingy.

    Holy heck!

Buses are so likely to explode or go up in flames at 1700 degrees that bus video recording kit has to be tested to survive it?

Fuck that for a game of soldiers, I'm taking the car.

    Big Brother

    SSL + AT&T + Google = solution?

Um, why is the black box data stored on the black box and not constantly streamed to "the cloud"? It's certainly not a privacy issue (guvmint don't care about that!), so what is it?

Big brother, black helicopter, cyborg, flames - which one to pick....

    FAIL

    It'll still fail

If the bus blown up in the London bombings was any indication, the cameras will be turned off beforehand anyway.

Its a shame the terrists always seem to be able to turn them off in advance otherwise they might be useful.
