back to article Google Wave search poisoned by scareware scammers

Scareware slingers have poisoned search results for Google Wave in a bid to expose users seeking the communication software to a fake anti-virus scan instead. Ironically, Google searches for terms related to Google Wave return results that point to sites hosting rogue antivirus, net security firm Websense warns. Google invited …

    Wave

I got an invitation to Wave and tested it out earlier. There is a lot to like but it's clear that the reason they've restricted the invites is because the whole thing is seriously buggy. There's a lot of kinks for them to get out before opening it out.

I love the idea and think that there is a lot to improve on email, IM and current collaboration tools. This won't work though unless it was an open standard and everyone could build a client or host a server. I can't see Google allowing that. It's a pity because I do really like what they've done.

    @Wave

I guess you havn't read anything about Wave then

"Yes, that's between wave providers: anyone can build a wave server and interoperate, much like anyone can run their own SMTP server. The wave protocol is open to contributions by the broader community with the goal to continue to improve how we share information, together. If you're interested in getting involved, here are a few things you should check out on www.waveprotocol.org:"

Seriously why did you get a god damn invite >.> *suffers from Wave envy*

    fake AV

A friend called me up to get my help removing a 'trojan'.

He didn't know what a trojan was but 'that windows anti thingy said it was a trojan'

It turned out to be "Windows Protection Suite".

Its branded like MS, it says stuff that sounds like MS, it acts like a fairly believable piece of software and its a pain to uninstall.

This is what makes botnets and without a reasonable level of knowledge of how to remove such things i think it would have taken more than the hour it took.

Should these people have their net access removed for being a bot on the web?

    Open standard

Wave is built on the XMPP protocol and the source code *will* be substantially open source. The idea is that, just as with an SMTP server or IMAP mail store, anyone will be able to implement their own server or client. That's why this is different and Google knows full well that it's the only way it can hope to get the technology into big corporations, which is essential if Wave is to stand even the remotest chance of replacing the ageing but ubiquitous email systems we have now.

    Will be open

As I understand it it will be open sourced and all the APIs will be doc'd. You will also be able to set up your own private servers. This info came from the original unveiling in May.

    @ Myself

Fair enough. I actually just watched the promo video and yes, they are going to open source the protocol. That's pretty impressive. If the community tasked with building on this protocol and future enhancements to it are opened up then this is really something special.

    YES.

I really think people should also be tested/have a licence before they use a computer. Just like for a car. 87% of email last month was spam (according to an article on BBC news website) - bots are mostly repsonsible for a lot of that, so hell yes kick em off and don't let 'em back on. Anything that reduces spam is a good thing.

Paris, because she knows about being knocked off.

Thumbs up for Google then ...

They could have tried to create something new innovative and proprietary and then they'd have a monopoly in an new area that very few people would be interested in.

Instead they are trying to create something new and innovative and open to all, a level playing field that they intend to dominate not with patents but on the merits of their products.

    Why?

So what is the purpose we would be sent to a fake antivirus site? To what end?

Why can't I see my post from hours ago?

Wave ? We need the opposite

It used to be that one could concentrate at work. You know, forward calls to the team secretary, check there are no important memos in the in-tray (physical one) and do some serious work without interruption.

I guess you could close down email, shut down collaboration (MSN or Sametime etc.) and turn off your mobile. How many people do ?

Do I really want one tool like Wave that's so busy notifying me of communications from all over the place that I can't concentrate ? I don't want to have to turn it off - but I want some form of prioritisation.

I got one of these nice iPhones and I can't even get it to screen calls - you know, like an old 6310i or K800i could by using profiles (e.g. put CEO and manager in a group - allow that group to sound a ringtone but not the others). At least the iPhone doesn't multi-task so it isn't always bothering me with notifications.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fossil - collaboration is great but we're getting to the stage where attention spans are diminishing so fast it's concerning.

    WTF?

    @AC 08:47

Custom ringtones for each of your contacts? Then just hit the silver button to bounce calls to voicemail. Works for me. BTW the ringtone on my wife's card is Darth Vader's theme... Dum dum dum dum-de-dum dum-de-dum, there's nothing like it for the fear factor ;-)

    Where will the data be

So where will all your data be held? No I haven't read the spec. yet. This is the first time I have heard of it.

"Should these people have their net access removed for being a bot on the web?"

    NO.

The power of the Internet comes from its freedom. That's the whole point. It allows people from all classes and races equal access to information and to have an equal voice. You take that away and there will be nothing left except a fuckload of routers and cables. Well, that and porn anyway.
