back to article Clown blasts off for ISS

The billionaire founder of the Cirque du Soleil this morning blasted off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on a mission to deliver a bit of levity to the International Space Station. This morning's Soyuz launch from Baikonur Cosmodrome Guy Laliberté, 50, plus flight engineers Jeffrey Williams and Maxim Suraev flew aloft …

    Well done

At least he is doing something fun with his money, and deservedly so. Better than the wunch of bankers largely responsible for our economic downfall.

    Juggling

Is it possible to juggle in zero gravity? I know it's not in the conventional juggling sense, but will he be able to test out other forms of juggling (off walls etc)?

This is vital research that needs to be carried out asap... The world needs to know. If we're ever going to have long distance inter-planetary flights, juggling will be an important factor!

They've never appealed to me. I wonder what his spacesuit looks like?

Clowns. Probably the least funny thing on earth. Probably that^'s why it's a good thing to send them to space. One way, please.

    Clown? Rocket???

So, did the rocket launch as expected, or did a huge plume of smoke come out the back, accompanied by a loud BANG, the doors falling off, the steering wheel coming off in the driver's hand, a wheel coming loose, one seat boinging skyward on a comical big spring and a huge, fake fire which another crew member attempted to put out with a bucket of confetti, which was finally thrown over a group of shrieking spectators?

    We need to know.

Gates, 'cos he's a frikking clown!

    @Juggling

Yep, look up "force bounce juggling". For a bit more fun you might want to search for "juggling in a cone" for something that looks like juggling in reduced gravity.

    He can stay up there

If he's responsible for the Cirque du Soleil he can bloody well stay up there as a punishment.

    Clowns in space.

Makes perfect sense to me. NASA will be watching this research with interest as building an entirely new, larger spacecraft is far more expensive than just working out how to have a perfectly ordinary Soyuz turn up with 28 passengers and a 20 foot ladder in it.

    But...

... did they make him leave behind the soda-syphon, the bucket full of white-wash (and the other one that's full of confetti) and the modelling balloons?

We need to know these things!

Space Tourists - Too bad NASA won't consider them

Taking the red clown noses into space are a good touch. Too bad the US won't consider commercial tourists. And soon the Space shuttle program will be ending and we will lose some of the upload and download capability for the space station. It is really almost the end of an era.
