back to article Apple denies censoring App Store swear words

Slipping completely out of character, Apple has responded to a firestorm of complaints over its seemingly random efforts to police content offered on its App Store. Apple insists it didn't reject a dictionary app for including common swear words. It rejected the app for "providing access" to offensive "urban slang." Yesterday …

    N*zi

Even a BBC History podcast's description got censored because it contained "N*zi".

    Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

Pretty much means "Who watches the watchmen?" Apple needs to get its <apple banned word> together in its App Store approval process.

    That's what dictionaries are for

    They contain words.

And I expect my dictionary to list words that are obscene/vulgar with guidance as to possible offensiveness so I don't commit a faux pas like David Cameron and make a right twat out of myself.

    Paris - because...

    WTF?

They're just word for flips sake!

So because one busy-body with too much time on their hands, might go out of their way to be offended, we end up with too much censorship!

Daily Mail readers all over again! "I've never heard of such and such, I've never engaged with such and such, but I must say I am utterly outraged at what I have been told by a single source, by word of mouth, as I have no life and need something utterly trivial to vent my pent up frustrations at!"

I have never heard of Matchstick Software before, so they got some free press, every cloud and all that!

    Not very consistent

Safari can be used to access all these words. Why was it allowed? I can write filty words with Pages, tsh tsh. Quicktime can be used to access porn movies - ban it. Of course this kind of censorship is not new, we see it everyday with religous biggots in many countries - including the Taliban.

not tempted to dev for iphone

I considered making an app for iphone, but with the 30% cut, the massive censorship (i.e. anything apple does not like today and we wont tell you why).

Then of course there is the odds that you will be in the 'miss' category.. how many app developer DONT make a load of cash.... at least 80 to 90 % i would expect!

    FAIL

    Just to be sure

If a 16 year old goes into Waterstones and tries to buy a dictionary, they check his ID and then refuse the sale? Right?

    What?!??!?!

"...words that many reasonable people might find upsetting or objectionable..."

so now some d*ckhe*d in his high castle is telling us what it's okay to think?

    WTF?

    I'm confused...

So one would need to be 17+ years old to download an apple dictionary app that has "vulgar" words, yet anyone with $5 can go into a book store and buy a real dictionary regardless of their age? Honestly now... am I missing something? Is this a joke? Are there hidden cameras around?

  13. The Indomitable Gall

    Precedent...?

I'm quite sure we had dictionaries in my primary school that contained the words "shit" and "fuck". In fact, I distinctly remember looking them up and sniggering. "Bollocks", too.

There has never been age restrictions on buying dictionaries -- why change the status quo?

    asshats

Yeah yeah yeah, it's their phone, can do whatever the hell they want with it. I wonder at what point they will have pissed off "enough" people to realize that they are actually hurting themselves?

As for me, I'll not be purchasing any more Apple products for a while. They did great with the iPod, the iMac and Powerbooks. Then they let marketing scumbags (or maybe accounting) take the reins. First the iPod Touch ports were changed JUST enough to force people to re-purchase accessories (consider me fucked over then). Then the insane decision to tie the iPhone to just one substandard provider in each country (I'll do without, thanks). Now their idiotic censoring of apps in their store.

Fuck'em with a rusty chainsaw. They can go hang.
