back to article More holes open up in Green Dam Youth Escort

A US software firm claims that China's already infamous Green Dam Youth Escort censorship software has liberally lifted code from its own cyber-filtering product. Solid Oak Software of Santa Barbara claims that the Green Dam package - which Beijing has declared must be installed on all PCs shipped in the People's Republic as …

Chinese govt and Falun Gong(Dafa) are both wrong!

Now they both seem to be on the wrong end of the stick.

    Wouldn't it be lovely

if Solid Oak changed their business focus and released details of exploits and holes in their code!

    Go

    Look

Why don't we all just agree to kick China off the Internet?

It's clearly what *they* want, and I could do with the reduction of junk email. Seems like everyone wins. And if the Chinese government ever gets over themselves and learns to play nice with the rest of us, we can just reconnect them.

    Noooo

Most spam originates from the US. Plus you can't kick China off the Internet, who the hell is going to power level my Warcraft character?

    Wait...

...China in lack of innovation shocker?

  7. Andus McCoatover

    S'pose they can't get Ubuntu?

Probably illegal to download, or indeed, distribute.

Mind, if Falun Gong renamed to Galun Fong, that might screw it.

    China stealing IP? Unthinkable.

Green Dam any pun on Red Wall?*

Also, a hotel near Beijing's Forbidden City. Why 'forbidden' for fuc*ks sake???

    I have a better idea

All other countries need to tell the People's Republic of China that no one else will assist in the censorship of their citizens.

"Can't we all just get along??"

The anti porn brigade are accidentally in total agreement for once, by accident, using the same tools, etc, and they still can't get their act together.

All that would be left would be the middle east , russia , and canada, and a few other places .

    heh heh heh

BTW... this program sounds a bit like Peerguardian...which I don't use anymore since I gave up xp.

ah well... back to upping "curious housewives 128"... got a ratio to feed.

    Bad China, Bad!

Spam and hacking attempts are exactly why I blackhole all of China & HK traffic from all networks & services that I manage. It has only been a minor problem once. And, once I explained why it was done the client had no problem using a free e-mail service for said communications.

"Also, a hotel near Beijing's Forbidden City. Why 'forbidden' for fuc*ks sake???"

Please tell me you were being ironic when you asked this question... And in case you aren't: Until fairly recently, it was forbidden for any commoner to enter the "forbidden city". Only the Emperor, the Entourage and the myriad of helpers (Shhh, don't mention them, they don't exist) were allowed inside. Oh, and the Imperial Guards on the outer levels.

Basically, think of it as an onion-like setup where the inner-most areas are only for the emperor, and with various others being allowed presence as you move away from the inner sanctum.

    Not much difference

I doubt this will affect that many people, relatively speaking. Most people in China buy their PC from big electrical markets, run by small businesses. Most of these businesses don't exactly use, ahem, 'real' software, so I seiously doubt they'll be installing this either.

    Interesting opinions on China

It's funny, every time there's an article about China, the comments show that many Westerners are still ignorant about it...

    Andus McCoatover:

Ubuntu is very much available anywhere in the major electronics market in Beijing, Zhongguancun. Much more, actually, than Red Flag Linux. And why 'Forbidden City'? Good question. Only Westerners call it that, probably because it was forbidden to them, like, 150 years ago. Chinese call it Gugong, the Old Palace, or Palace Museum.

    Joe User:

Sure. You start first. Trash everything you own with a label "Made in China". See? Easy! Come back to me once you've done that and sworn never to do it again.

    "Bad China, Bad!" Anonymous Coward:

So you mean, when China censors the Internet, it's bad, but when it's you - then it's ok? Actually, I think the Party would like more self-righteous people like you, who don't even need to ask users what they want before restricting them.

That said, I'm mightily pissed off every day at the Chinese censorship of the Internet (and at people like above who add their own), as well as the lack of IPv4 addresses attributed to them by the US. That doesn't exactly help establishing connections in the first place for the country with the most Internet users..

No end to the stupidity and lack of knowledge

Yes all you stupid people, please don't come to China, continue to think it's bad, continue to think there is no nice food here or beautiful people, great cars, great clothes, great night life, great computer stores, great sunshine, great prices, low taxes, no violence, great beer, and last but not least, there is a great Firewall to try and keep all the rubbish stupid people like you emanate.

Right, I must just go back to building the biggest monster of a pc ever for my own entertainment for a fraction of the cost it would have cost me to build it in the UK :D Tootle pip!

    Keep hating!!

    @ Neoc - Forbidden City

Yep, I was being (partially) ironic.

But a few years ago when there I was forbidden by some nice bloke in a fetching green uniform (with a matching tasteful green cap - didn't want to see the colour of his gun, or the bullet) taking a photo of...an ice cream stand in the F/C. Photo of Mao TseTung no sweat, get them from...the ice cream vendor.

    Some things never change...
